Allowing option for both direct links and immediate download

I'd like to give users the option to directly download a file or create a link for direct download. I've looked through the code and I haven't been able to find the decision point for which kind of download to do. I've modifiec download direct to show both button choices, but I haven't been able to figure out where the code is that I can use to recognize what to do based on what button is pushed. The hidden fields "down_direct" and "down_script" which seem promising, but aren't used anywhere.
