Best Server Configuration for Site with Huge Traffic

#1 Postby likehosting » Jan 19, 2013 10:30 pm

Hello Guys, I've a question for you.

I have a file sharing website with 40/50.000 visits daily. I use this server configuration on fdcserers.net:

1 Main Server
3 Storage Servers

The Main Server: ( DUAL Intel Xenon E5 2620 | 32GB ECC RAM | 2 x 240GB SSD intel 330 h/w RAID1 (3ware card) | 1Gbps Unmetered Connection )

Storage Servers: ( Intel Xeon E2603 | 16GB ECC RAM | 4 x 3TB sATA RAID10 | 10Gbps Unmetered ( Average usage under 3Gbps p/m, can bust up to 10Gbps )

The price, including Full Managment is 4700$ / Monthly.

Free users download at 50 kb / Sec, Premium 2-3 MB / Sec (450 Premium Users). But when we have a lot of users online, we have problems with download speed.. some time the speed for premium users is less then 1 MB..

What you think is better solution of our for the same price?

You think is better more server with less bandwidth?

You are not going to get download speeds > 10mbit from fdcservers during peak hours, especially not if the servers are in usa and downloaders not in usa.

fdc isnt know to have the best routing.

They also have different locations. so you can start with mention what location you are using.

Usually the best overall locations is chicago, new york, washington dc and netherlands for covering north america and europe. Where most of the paying customers are.

Servers are located in Holand, and actually premium users download at 20kb/sec of 3MB limit :S

My best bet is to change to some more quality connection providers.
Getting 10Gbit speed at budget prices is kinda asking for it :)

What providers would you prefer in terms of quality connectivity (Europe and US)?

well
if that is your budget for those 3 servers
then i am happy to provide 3 X I7 servers with 64 GB ram and same setup as you use now :D

but on the other side , it can be a lot cheaper to
the most expensive part is the managing part ofcourse (you pay to let other users do your work )

but now we come to the best question

you use a 10GB line , most datacenters offers a gbit line but not a 10GB line ( network cards are mainly 10/100/1000 but not 10/100/1000/10000 )

Your server is managed and the persone who manage your server can not help you or provide you the needed information ??

if you go out on a calculation, depending on filesize ( can not be to big based on fileserver storage , 6TB of space X 3 is 18TB of space ) then you should have plenty of speed left on a gbit line

so lets start the question , the line that the datacenter is offering , is it a dedicated line to start with or is it a shared line ?? ( shared = splitted by atleast 42 users located in the same rack )

that part means that in worste case scenario you can use max of 2,38 Gbit (based on the 42 users that are using a full line )

on other side , you know as good as i know that this is not the case , 10Gbit does not get shared over 42 users but over a lot more users ...

so your solution to this problem

contact your persone who manage the server and thell him to place your server on a other location in the datacenter so you get back full speed
or
ask him to provide dedicated speed instead shared speed
or
ask him to install a firewall and protect yourself from those ddos attacks that are using up all the speed

eather way
if none of those can help , then just place a extra server and split the traffic over the servers

if you like to have a server offer , just take a look at http://dehost.org and you see what i can offer ( germany ) but it is not managed (unless you like that ? )
