Few questions about servers

#1 Postby macowa » Mar 10, 2014 8:46 am

Hello, I know there are few topics about the servers spec, but they become old, so I'll ask for your help again.

Main server:

- Is 100Mbp enought even if I'm looking to have high number of loads.

- 5 TB Bandwith ? Or should I get at least 10 TB?

- Do I need a lot of RAM for high load ? 16 GB is enought?

- CPU ? 2x Intel Quad Core Xeon L5410.

- HP or DELL servers?

- Raid 5 or 10 ?

- Can I install nginx by myself, or do I have to add some custom code, that only sibsoft admin has?

Fileserver:

- Is 1Gbps / 100 TB Traffic enought if I put some hard restrictions for normal user (250 Kbps for download etc..) ?

- 12x2TB SATA2

I saw many new filehost giving 500 GB space for user? Should I buy something like 12x4TB SATA2 to give the same storage for free user? Or almost all users use only something like 10 GB/500 GB?

What other file sharing websites use for the hard drive, SATA or SDD?

- Raid 5 or Raid 10 (I don't want to lose space on HDD)

- What's the best OS for file hosting? Centos / Debian?

- Should I get 2 file servers with (12x1 TB SATA 2) instead of only one file server?

- Server location, what's the best location where european users can have the best speed (NL or Germany?)

That's all, I hope someone would be able to help me, thank you.

Main server:

enough
- 5 TB Bandwith ? Or should I get at least 10 TB?
5TB should be enough
- Do I need a lot of RAM for high load ? 16 GB is enought?
the higher the better
- CPU ? 2x Intel Quad Core Xeon L5410.
thats a very old processor
- HP or DELL servers?
doesnt matter
- Raid 5 or 10 ?
10
- Can I install nginx by myself, or do I have to add some custom code, that only sibsoft admin has?
there is custom code involved, you need to buy nginx mod

Fileserver:

- Is 1Gbps / 100 TB Traffic enought if I put some hard restrictions for normal user (250 Kbps for download etc..) ?
- 12x2TB SATA2
will be enough to start with, but if u fill the above hdd space it wont be enough

upgrade to unmetered, once u start using that 100tb

I saw many new filehost giving 500 GB space for user? Should I buy something like 12x4TB SATA2 to give the same storage for free user? Or almost all users use only something like 10 GB/500 GB?
each site is different, some will have many 10gb users others wil have a few users with TBs of data

What other file sharing websites use for the hard drive, SATA or SDD?
sata for storage

- Raid 5 or Raid 10 (I don't want to lose space on HDD)
10, if you can afford or go with raid6

- What's the best OS for file hosting? Centos / Debian?
either, use whichever your comfortable with

- Should I get 2 file servers with (12x1 TB SATA 2) instead of only one file server?
small servers are better than one huge server, so go with 2

- Server location, what's the best location where european users can have the best speed (NL or Germany?)
NL

Thank you for your fast reply, I forgot to ask about the RAM for the file server, do you think 16 GB is enough?

16 should be fine to start with, once your database size increases you can upgrade it

Create a raid array with 1x 12 disks for 1 virtual 12TB Disk and install/create your FileServer on this server.

If you are not familiar with Linux and Raid system, working with a System linux admins is better for you.
