I'm on RAID 50 and am having io problems. I think you should go with RAID 10

@ Dulci - Hey http://www.ovh.co.uk/ is the same as ovh.com right?

since its a UK site do they have DMCA policies deeply?
Dulci wrote:well im using ovh.com the prices are good i have over 100 tb traffic on a month still working :). my fileserver gets 1 gbit full every day.

186 216 075 MB Traffic last month :) with other companys you could get a problem :). My site is not for download only for stream. but 100 tb is good enough for starting a site.

glumbo: If you don't know what is good solution, better don't give dishonest suggestions.

saminda: You should go with RAID 5. It's the solution for you. Go with enterprise hardware.

OVH is never a solution. They advertise unlimited bandwidth but limit your bandwidth to 10mbps if you will go over their specific limit like 5, 10 or 15TB. which is nothing for file hosting.

Did you actually try Raid 5? If yes, then you need good enterprise hardware.

& are you using RAID 10? If not, then you have no right to recommend Raid 10 to others.

saminda:, RAID 5 is best option. Make sure that you have quality hardware. RAID 10 will flush your 50% of disk space & raid 10 is not essential.

best for a small site like your. Think it you will get 10-12TB data per day, where your Raid 10 will be? That time, you will scam your affiliates & hosting company.

Saminda: Trust me, RAID 5 is best solution, but you must have high grade raid card & enterprise hard disks.

how you guys configure the fileserver? which OS you put? I usually go with Ubuntu or Debian.
do you put everything on one partition? ext3 partition though only support up to 4 TB....

Hello,

Well, go with these configuration.

Go with CentOS latest ;)

Dell R510
2x500GB 2.5" RAID 1 for OS
12x2TB 3.5" for files RAID 5

If Dell R510 is not not available, then go with HP or maybe supermicro if your host have that, it all depends upon your requirements. Dell R510 has 12 3.5" & 2 2.5" hdd bays while HP DL180 has 12 3.5" bays only.

HP DL180
2x500GB 3.5" RAID for OS
10x2TB 3.5" for file RAID 5

Regards

Hello,

Install CentOS with default setting. There is no really need of creating custom partitions. However, you can increase your /tmp partition size.

Get RAID 5 for whole 12x2TB or whatever you have. If you have more disks, you can make two Raid 5.

Hope this will help ;)
