High Server Load

#1 Postby billionz » Feb 20, 2012 10:15 am

Currently running 3x 1gbps unmetered servers as file servers (website is on a separate server)

On the 3 servers with 1gbps lines there:
10x2tbs (for files) in raid5
2x2 (for operating system) in raid1

With only 1tb of files on each of the servers, they are already taking over 30+ seconds to start a download, so I am worried to let users keep uploading as the time might increase.

Has anyone suffered the same issue, what could we do to improve this lag time? Is big servers the way to go or multiple little servers?

All advice welcomed.

it depends on the amount of downloads certain files have.
have downloaded files (1000+ accesses) cloaking up the server, I have the same issue.
for my experiance many smaller server are doing a better job then a few big servers.

check this thread as well:

The easy way out would be to:
consider running nginx on port x for filedownloads and apache on another for cgi-bin

a bit more work would be to optimize apache, as in stamos' thread. If you're running default configurations you can surely gain lots of performance there
