you might want to reconsider the pay for itself in three months time frame

I have been doing it for a year almost and it doesnt pay its way yet

^^what is your site?

I have been doing this for less than a month and I have already generated enough to pay back the xfilesharing script cost + enough for hosting

edit: after all expenses paid, I still have some profit

Like any business, there is no exact date for when it'll start generating revenue. You definitely need to have some sort of goal yes, but to accurately pin point your success it's impossible to say.

I spent 4 stressful months and dumped ridiculous amounts of money before seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

You cannot expect to buy this software, slap it on a server and people will be flocking to you.

Here are a few things that you'll need:

A PLAN (doesn't have to be a perfect one, but have to have one.)
SOURCES (Where you will get the people that will be interested in your service.)
MONEY! (You're going to need it if you want to stay afloat)
ADMINISTRATION (Server Administrators are very important unless you're a guru.)

Anyway, I hope this helps.

That's very true Dotceo...

As for servers start with some VPS boxes ... lets say 2 x Intel Xeon VPS servers and maybe 1TB of 100MPS bandwidth for each....

Its very cheap that way.. As your site grows , you host can move your VPS boxes in to dedicated boxes... Remember though Network Speed & RAM space are important if you get a lot of downloads a day...

From, there once the site is running smoothly , then follow Dotceo 's advise above :D

well i think i will be able to sustain it as i did not get into this blindly. I started my site knowing i had people who would use my service since day 1.

Which is why i am having about 20 to 30 000 impressions per day in less yhan 2 weeka of launching the site. I dont think anybody should enter this business without any advantage or foolproof plan and a plan b along with it.

I am balancing the referral sites and direct traffic. I am unexpectedly getting a lot of unsollicited traffic which i think is good

what is your plan though?

I started with 120$ :)

I must say it all depends on what you want to do with the site and how...

don't start with a 400$ a month server, start with a 150$ or less server and upgrade when it gets near its limits...
