Why do you need High RAM for Fileservers?

#1 Postby beeman1212 » Mar 30, 2012 9:26 pm

This is probably a stupid question but what's the point of having 16GB of ram on a fileserver? isn't 8GB more than enough?

Ah I just googled some more and found the same answer "less disk i/o due to caching in RAM of the files " Thanks chrda. Do servers do this automatically?

If you have a lot of files it won't make a big difference. I have already tested having 32gb of ram vs 8gb and 16gb

Hi,

so you have concluded that there is no differences between having 8 Gb or 32 Gb ?

But you probably use Nginx ...

You really need ram for hosting mp3s etc.

If all the requests where to be be from the harddrives, then the IO would kill the server.

Good question gLoad, i was hoping to find an answer on this too.
So,
Streaming songs (includes embeds) vs downloading songs - Which requires more RAM ?
