Neither. You need a VPS or Dedicated Server. The cheapest decent one you will find will be $29.99 if you are lucky.

Check out this thread that Pilgrim posted:

All those shared providers will all work. Most of them will be slow and if you get a decent amount of traffic to your site those services will shut you down and not give you a refund. Now look at the link I provided you if you want a half-way decent site.

Upload3r, if you ask me, I have no idea if XFS Pro will work on these. The problem is that these overselling sites are limiting everything too much and you never know what will be cached or when process will be killed. And they can close your account any time if they don't like you.

Hi,

I am looking at different hosting packages as well and wondered if you could have a look at them;

First is:
Netrack

It looks like they do a pretty good deal for $79
160gb hdd
unlimited bandwidth
100mbs
http://www.netrackservers.com/hostingso ... rvers.html

Next:
FastHosts
80gb hdd
unlimited bandwidth
10mbs
This is a UK company and would be the most I could afford upto.
http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/dedicatedser ... 250_Linux/

and:
JTLNet
200gb
900gb bandwidth
no idea on speed...
http://www.jtlnet.com/ds.php

I quite liked the $79 one, but what OS would be best.. I have more experience with UBUNTU, but doesn't mean it will work ok.. will it?? And do I need a control panel??

Thanks for your help

netrackservers.com looks pretty cool. You won't get a LOT of bandwidth there for such money, but at least you won't need to worry about it.
But hey, read this first: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthrea ... ackservers

thanks for that, yeah after reading that it didn't sound too good.. however I found a site browsing that site called dedicatedbox.net which got some nice reviews and they are fairly cheap, $55 for celeron 1.8, 120gb and 1000gb transfer.

Does it matter what OS I go for, or just whatever I feel comfortable using most??

Thanks

Not bad. Now we're meditating on idea to provide pre-installed tuned script on our own server with these spec: 100Gb HDD / 2000Gb Transfer / $50, with free support.
Do you think somebody will use service like this?

Sounds good, however what would the server specs be? What connection would it have.

Since you would have a few people using that, it might slow down alot if one of the sites hosted got very popular.

However it does sound good :)

You're correct. We can try with Duron 1400 / 1Gb RAM / 1000 mbit connection with 10-15 Tb transfer. CPU is low end, I know, but it shouldn't affect uploads/downloads much, and we won't host more than 4-5 sites on one server. So this will be zero-time-start solution for new growing sites that don't have many users yet. I think we can give it a try next few weeks and take a look howz it going. I belive price can drop to $40-$30 per month only later.

PS: hehe, don't know how but these guys offer dedicated for $50 only now: http://order.dedicatedbox.net/order.php?step=2&pid=3
