RAID 5 vs 6 vs 10

#1 Postby Jesse202 » Mar 19, 2012 12:42 pm

For file servers. Which do you go with?

5 only allows for one hard drive to crash, while 6 can have two crash. So seems like 6 should be chosen over 5.

10 still seems like the best, but cuts your space in half.

If you have 4-12~ Disk and you dont have financial problem Raid 10 is BEST.

But you need acceptable storage price and good performance, HARDWARE Raid5 is very good.

I have 1 server with Software RAID5 (5x2TB) and 2 Servers with Hardware Raid5 (12x2TB).

All weekends i can see high DISK IO loads in Software Raid Server and i need 2-3x time restart this server for resolve problem.

Other Hardware Raid5 server have more disk, more download request, but idont have problem.

All servers are optimized for Storage performance from 10+ year expert Linux Administrator.

If you have more than 12+ disk, Raid6 is better choose for Data protection.

how can one say RAID 10 is best for file hosting?

It's read intensive environment not write. So, RAID 10 will be useless if you are not getting high writes.

Better stay with RAID 5 or maximum RAID 6

RAID 10 have very good write and read speed. Dont need party calculation on write.

My File Servers have 4x Read and 1x Write DiskIO mostly.

ufkabakan: Why to increase write performance when you have just several hundred files per day?
