If you have a server with say 12 x 2tb drives.
Anyone here just set each drive up as a seperate subdomain??
Would that workout okay if each drives data was backed up on a different machine?
How does this compare to raid 10?
How much faster/slower would the above set up be vs raid6?
Raid kind of worries me in that if you lose 2 drives with raid 10 you could lose your entire server data.
There must be a very good reason why everyone uses raid over lots of separate sub domains. Also say you have the nginx mod done, would you need to pay for 12 x nginx mods if the drives are all allocated to different subdomains?
XFileSharing Pro - Raid or No Raid?? 12x2tb

Got the answer already , its not needed to buy each time the nginx mod.

i would go with raid10, gives good performance and data is safe
Thanks for you help. If we had a back up server with 12 drives though this would be okay right?
With raid 10 if 2 drives fail on same build then the entire 12 drives are lost though right? that is kind of worrying for us.
What about raid 6 ? this can have 2 drive failure i hear and still be okay?
Also about the 12 seperate subdomains one for each drive, would that not be quite a fast solution? without the worry of losing entire array?
how much time would it take to transfer 2TB from your backup server ? can you afford such a downtime ?joebloggs wrote: Thanks for you help. If we had a back up server with 12 drives though this would be okay right?
chances of that are extremely rare, raid10 is safest; but its not an alternative to offsite backupsjoebloggs wrote: With raid 10 if 2 drives fail on same build then the entire 12 drives are lost though right? that is kind of worrying for us.
raid 6 has poor write performance & any 2 drive failures can mean you loose all datajoebloggs wrote: What about raid 6 ? this can have 2 drive failure i hear and still be okay?
as i said previously, it depends if you have a offsite backup & the amount of downtime you can affordjoebloggs wrote: Also about the 12 seperate subdomains one for each drive, would that not be quite a fast solution? without the worry of losing entire array?

do not forget that Raid 5/6/10 are usually found on high end controllers, that will surely provide an option to configure some drive as hot spare, and some monitoring software to instantly send an email when a drive fail or has an anomaly.
Bye.
Thanks for your input too on this. The email alert is somethign we will certainly use.
thanks
