Server questions

#1 Postby yragus » Jan 02, 2013 2:42 pm

Hello, I need some infos about servers. I read that I have to have 2 servers to run my website: 1 for the website and 1 for the files.

At the moment I have only one server which support website + files.
This server has those specs :

Processor type : Intel Xeon E5620
Processor speed : 2400 Mhz
RAM : 8 GB
Hard disks : 4x 1TB SATA

My question is, what kind of server I need to use for the files ? What specs ? Do I need to configure it like the main server or I can start using it wihtout setting anything ?

Thanks a lot

you can start using it, once you get more traffic then separate main and file server

Hey yragus,

I think your config is enought to start too.

But i'm curious, what is your host provider?

Depends on the port. If you go for 100MBps servers then you can use almost anything, Atom servers will use an entire 100MBps port no problems with 4 HDDs.

Anything more than 100MBps and you'll need to up the CPU and RAM, I personally use the current generation Intel E3-1230 v2 in my 25TB file servers with 16GB RAM and they serve 80% full GBit 24/7.

If you want encoding of media then you need a powerful CPU, preferably two Xeon's. GBit servers also generally require a little tuning to get the most out of them however I use FreeBSD instead of Linux.
