Software & Hardware Raid

#1 Postby traqck » Mar 11, 2013 6:29 pm

Hello !

All over the forum most people talk about Hardware RAID.

After looking on the net it seems that Software RAID 10 for example has been really enhanced lately and it's working really fine.

What do you guys think about software RAID10 for a file server ? Will the performances be good/as good as h/w RAID10 ?

Raid 10 for File server very expensive solution, however if you have lot of disk and space already, you can use. FileServers have mostly random READ request and Raid 10 performance is equal like Raid 0 on read request.

I do not suggest Software Raid, because it is not a real Raid, and first disk use for boot section. If you lost first disk, you have a big trouble. However still you can recover your files after losing first disk but a bit more hard.
