Amazon S3

Has anyone though about using Amazon S3 for storage and such? It would remove the high load issue and allow great service for customers all around.

Is the cost really that much more?

The cost would destroy you unless you run a premium file host

I'm having a hard time seeing how the cost would destroy you.

In the short run sure, you can't make money because of bandwidth costs, but in the long run your more easily scaleable and you will have speeds all around. Plus you can negotiate after a certain amount to have your pricing changed. (Enterprise pricing)

We already implemented CDN (not Amazon S3 though) for the few customers. But all of them stopped using it because it was too expensive. We would never recommend any CDN after such experience.

Fair enough, I'm only asking because I wanted to see other users experiences.

So it's much better to buy your own servers then. I'd assume if you could afford it collocation would be best.
