Referer tracking

#1 Postby RockDiz » Dec 15, 2012 2:16 pm

Hello,

when I look at files being downloaded, the Referer looks like "/XXXXXXX"
which is the same as the download page domain.com/XXXXXXX
what does that mean when the Referer is the same as the download page link?

Here's an example between two files: http://i47.tinypic.com/b5sn53.jpg

the IPs are almost the same all the way down the list...
Also I'm getting 1million+ downloads a day with only 350,000 page views.

If the 'referer' header is empty or equal to the download page, it either means that they have opened the download link without coming from a previous webpage or they are using a browser addon which enforces the header sent to be equal to the page they enter. Most browsers even have a (hidden) option to disable the 'referer' header entirely, which means it would always be empty.

Tracking 'referer' headers has never been reliable, so it is not a bug and there is nothing you can do about this.
