Sorry, finally managed to cure it - my fault! The URL to the upload script in the javascript was wrong. Was pointing to a test version that existed on the old but not the new server.

I'm running Xupload pro, which has been working happily for a year Just migrated the system using PLESK to a new server using automatic migration tool, which should preserve all permissions, ownerships etc (have checked and it does seem to have done this properly).
