questions about VPS/DEDICATED storage space.

#1 Postby ruben » Nov 06, 2010 2:31 pm

Hello,

my question is if i buy a vps server with 50GB hard drive space.
and use it as a fileserver could i only have 50GB consisting out of files on my fileserver? or does it mean only for storage of the script (website).

Because i want to give my costumers 10GB Storage space on their accounts
and for example i have like 500.000 daily pageviews.
could u please give me answers or solutions ?

Thanks.

i do not complete understand what you mean

if you got a hd of 50GB then you can max use 50GB of storage ( - space of website and linux ofcourse , so about 45 GB can be used for files)

you can never go over your hd limit as it is not possible to store more then you have

the script itself checks on the filesize what amount a user have

like i do on my account , i assigned myself 100TB of file storage when i got only a 1TB hd

but as soon i used 1TB hd then my hd is full and will it not store anymore

so to answer your question , you are only limited on storage space and the script checks the size of files by the database and not with the files stored

I mean for example 500.000 Costumers X 10GB storage Per account means 5 million GB.
So do i have to buy a dedicated server with 5.000.000 GB Hard disk space ?

no ,
as i explained
i assigned myself 100TB ( 100 000 GB ) but i got only 1TB hd

the script checks the database to calculate the used amount

but if you got only 50GB hd , then you can assign as mutch as you like but you wont be able to use more then 50GB hd

let me provide a example

1hd of 50GB
10 users of 10GB = 100GB

all is fine until your hd of 50GB is full
if full => error no more room to store files

the hd that the script use and your own hd has nothing to do with each other

the limit just prevent you from uploading files to your account
but does not limit the upload in global

but if you got 10 premium members and you assign then 100GB , then why would you only use a 50GB hd ?? , they will complain to you then
