Thanks. Can visits from a banned country not access the entire website or will it only show a"download not allowed" sort of message?

Thanks!

Can you shed some light on ratios? I am looking for a server configuration that would be a good start, but don't really know what to expect. Cloud hosting seems to be ideal as it is scalable.

On average, for every 25GB of files that are hosted, would it be ok to assume the following?
2.5TB bandwidth (each file downloaded 100 times per month)
Server with 1GB of ram and a 2GHz Xeon CPU?

So if I had 250GB of files, I'd require roughly 25TB of bandwidth, 10GB of ram and 5x dual core 2 Ghz Xeon's?

Is a 1Gbps port required? That translates into ~125MB/s theoretical speed which isn't that much if you have 100 people downloading files at the same time.

theoretically yes, your calculaton is right. 2,5 tb bandwidht is ok I think to start with. Try not to buy from a reseller. My partner has several 10Gbit uplinks (AMSix, NLix, Jointtransit, Openpeering, Cogent) and several 1Gbps uplinks (Level3, GlobalCrossing, KPN).

1Gbps poort including 500Mbit traffic costs 1500 euro per month, from first hand. Based on actual usage I pay in the area of € 3.- per Mbit.1Gbps unmetered dedicated for EUR 3000,- . Resellers sell same thing, but with worse support and more expensive. Leaseweb isn't a reseller, FDC isn't one and voxility isn't one. You could start with one of them.

Thanks. I think to start off I'll go with cloud hosting. That would keep my cost down and based on how it goes Xfs would allow me to add additional servers (any of the hosts from your recommendation).

Now I gotta figure out how to montize because $0.05 per 1000 impressions is LOW! 50,000 downloads translates into $10 if they view 4 ads until they get to the download page.

Has anybody used Adfly?

You meant for 1k impressions? I thought per impression )
1 impression = 0,001 - 0,03 for small filehost (depends on network and your visitors). Just don't annoy your visitors, they will just use other filehost. ;)

I'd not use adfly, because you will get blocked on many forums.

0.001 x 1000 = $1
0.03 x 1000 = $30

Please point me to one of the ad networks which pays a ecpm of 1-30$ for "small" or "large" file hosts

Thanks! $1CPM sounds much better, but is $30CPM realistic? I own a picture site that always is around $1.5-1.75CPM.
