XUpload - Access control to xupload

I have the pro version of xupload up and running on my web server. It does its job fine but I am looking for a way to control access to xupload. I'm currently running Joomla 1.5 but running cgi from within Joomla looks unlikely to happen so I dont think I can use Joomla for user access controls. A .htaccess file in the same directory as the xupload_form.html is the best solution I have been able to come up with. Are there any other options?
